Tol

Tol is a village and parish in the municipality of Castropol, in north-western Asturias. The village that gives the parish its name lies about 7 kilometres from the municipal capital and at around 80 metres above sea level. Altogether the parish groups fourteen settlements and farmsteads, among them Barrionuevo, Bourio, Pumarega and Villasivil, and its patron is the Saviour (San Salvador).

Its past is tied to the Camino de Santiago: according to the sources, in the early Middle Ages there was a monastery here dedicated to Santa María, which later took the name of San Salvador and in the 11th century was held by the family of Count Gundemaro Pinióliz. Today the Camino del Norte, arriving from Castropol, offers two options at Tol for reaching Ribadeo: follow the coast through Barres and Figueras, or go inland towards Vegadeo skirting the Eo estuary.
