Casa Bárcena, in Carreña de Cabrales, is a traditional Asturian house with a coat of arms, built in the 17th century. It was partly in ruins and was fully rehabilitated to host the interpretation centre of the La Covaciella cave: the Principality of Asturias funded the building works and the Ministry of Culture the museum content. Beneath its three-pitched laminated-timber roof, the interior is laid out on two floors resting on large stone walls.
The original cave cannot be opened to the public, which is why a replica of its main group, the bison panel, was created here, produced from a three-dimensional laser scan of the cave walls. The visit is completed by panels on the themes, techniques and chronology of the cave’s Palaeolithic rock art, and by a touchscreen offering a virtual tour of the original cave.
