The Biblioteca Pública Municipal Carlos González Posada is the public library of Candás, in the municipality of Carreño. It was created by a ministerial order of April 1949 and opened in 1955 in premises of the former Casa del Pueblo; since 20 May 1998 it has occupied a restored old mansion in the centre of the town.
The building, in an eclectic style with neo-Renaissance touches, dates from 1909-1910 and has two floors and a garden enclosed by a wrought-iron fence that can now be visited. An extension attached to the rear was inaugurated in November 2009. It has a periodicals room, children’s and baby areas, an adult section with Asturian and local collections, an audiovisual area, study rooms and a multipurpose hall for talks, exhibitions and book presentations. Its activities include a reading club and reading-promotion sessions with storytelling and crafts.
