San Román is a parish in the municipality of Candamo, located in its central part, within the Nalón valley. It has around 290 inhabitants and covers just over five square kilometres. It is made up of the village of San Román and the hamlets of Ferreras and Las Parrucas.
Its heritage includes the Palacio de Valdés Bazán, which since May 1999, after being restored, has housed the interpretation centre for the Cueva de la Peña. The 18th century was probably the parish’s most splendid period, and in July 1792 it was visited by Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. The religious festivities on the local calendar are La Candelaria, in February, and San Lorenzo, on 10 August.
