The Casa de la Apicultura is a museum collection run by the Boal town council and devoted to beekeeping, a traditional activity in this part of Asturias. It is in the village of Los Mazos, about two kilometres from the municipal capital, in a former rural school built in the mid-1930s by the society “Naturales del Concejo de Boal”, founded in Havana, and restored for this new use.
It has a dual purpose: cultural space and training and information centre for the area’s beekeepers. Its permanent exhibition, with around a hundred old and modern pieces, traces the evolution of beekeeping techniques in the area over the last century, supported by panels taken from the book “Las abejas, la miel y la cera en la sociedad tradicional” by Xuaco López Álvarez. It also has an audiovisual room, where a documentary on honey and wax is shown, and a library specialising in beekeeping.
