Plaza España

Plaza de España, popularly known as «El Parche», is one of the central spaces of Avilés. According to the Vivir Asturias portal, since ancient times it has concentrated much of the city’s social, commercial and cultural life, and its origins go back to the 17th century.

The ensemble is organised around a triangle of three prominent buildings —the palacio del marqués de Ferrera, the casa de García Pumarino and the town hall itself— linked to one another by arcaded streets. The town hall, built in the 17th century following the post-Herrerian pattern and inaugurated in the 1670s, is one of the three great noble houses that defined the look of the plaza; in 1836 the present tower and a clock were added.
