The historic centre of Avilés is the old part of the town, declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1955. The streets Rivero and Galiana were the first to grow beyond the medieval walled enclosure; of those walls, torn down in 1818, only a few remnants survive today, built into the Camposagrado palace.
Among its civic heritage, the Valdecarzana palace stands out as the only medieval civil building that has come down to us, along with the area around Plaza de España, where the palace of the Marqués de Ferrera, the García Pumarino house and the 17th-century town hall form a triangle linked by arcaded streets.
