The Biblioteca Pública Municipal Bances Candamo is the municipal library of Avilés. It began as the Biblioteca Popular Circulante, promoted from 1919, and in 1949 took the name of the Avilés-born writer Francisco Bances Candamo, born in 1662. Its children’s reading room, created in 1965, was the first built in an Asturian library.
Since 1989 it has been housed in the Casa Municipal de Cultura, a multipurpose building of about 5,000 m² with two very different facades, one of them facing Ferrera park. Its collection exceeds 100,000 documents in various formats, and besides lending, consultation and a study hall it hosts activities such as reading clubs, book presentations and lectures.
