XXXII Mercáu Astur de Porrúa. Llanes

The Mercáu Astur de Porrúa is one of the major events on the festive calendar of Eastern Asturias and the pioneering traditional market in the region: it was launched in 1994 by the Asociación Cultural Llacín, formed by residents of the village, and has been held on the fourth weekend of August ever since. In 2026, it reaches its XXXII edition, on August 22 and 23.

The proposal is a living recreation of a market from before the industrial revolution. Porrúa —one of the best-preserved villages in Llanes, home to the Museo Etnográfico del Oriente de Asturias— is transformed for two days into a period setting where around a hundred artisans and some three hundred extras from the village itself are spread out. You can see spinning and weaving, the making of madreñas, wood carving, the crafting of gaitas, the production of cheeses and local products, as well as native livestock breeds. Added to this are traditional music and dance, bagpipe bands, street theater, and the appearance of characters from Asturian mythology (the trasgu, the xana, the busgosu…) that surprise visitors along the paths and meadows. Local gastronomy and organic products complete the day.

Practical tips. It is a very family-friendly and photogenic plan; it is advisable to go in the morning to avoid the busiest hours, bring cash for the artisan stalls, and wear comfortable footwear (the route is along paths and meadows). Parking in Porrúa is limited, so it is best to arrive early. It can be combined with a visit to the Museo Etnográfico and the beaches of Llanes.
