On December 26 the Charity Route of the Three Wise Men returns for its twelfth edition. It is a 12-kilometer walking march between Cangas de Onís and the Real Sitio de Covadonga where each participant brings a toy for children in need. It is not a race: people walk at a stroll’s pace, on asphalt and without difficulty, so families, strollers, and elderly people can attend.
It is organized by the non-profit Asociación Ruta Solidaria del Rey Mago. All proceeds from registrations go to NUPA and the Asociación Galbán, and the toys, new or second-hand but complete, in good condition and unwrapped, are delivered in Covadonga for Ningún Niño Sin Cenar. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as a Wise Man, page, or “repentant Grinch”, and there is a prize for the most original way of carrying the gifts.
This year the walk also supports a new cause: El Camino de Carlota, which is raising funds for a gene therapy for Cockayne syndrome type B, the rare disease of Carlota, a four-year-old girl from Mieres.
