About the exhibition

Throughout the period that the Convivium exhibition is open to the public, guided tours will be held covering the different parts of the display: the appetizer, the menu, shopping and the pantry, the kitchen, the table, and the after-dinner conversation.

Convivium. Arqueología de la dieta mediterránea immerses us in the historical and current significance of this Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The exhibition brings together a set of knowledge, practices, rituals, traditions, and symbols related to crops and harvests, fishing and animal husbandry, as well as the ways of preserving, transforming, cooking, sharing, and consuming food.

The motto of the exhibition is the act of eating together, one of the foundations of the cultural identity of Mediterranean communities. From here comes the title convivium, a word used by Cicero to refer to gatherings of friends around the table.

Exhibition content

In the exhibition, the visitor will be able to learn how the Mediterranean diet, now linked to a healthy lifestyle, has been built over time, from Prehistory to the present day. Special emphasis is placed on its cultural and social aspect, addressing in the narrative the latest developments in archaeological research on the subject.

Likewise, the Mediterranean diet looks out to the Cantabrian Sea, pausing at the particularities of this region and dedicating a space to the Asturian cider culture, also part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
