Description of the show

ONÍRICA MECÁNICA is an invitation to soar through the universe of adventure novels created by Julio Verne, but also to imagine futures in which to generate new, illusionary stories, far from the current pessimism.

A place where new battles are won, distant places are conquered, and the human quality that makes us different is valued again: our ability to imagine.

Julio Verne was famous for his adventure novels and his deep influence on the science fiction literary genre. The French author reflected, like no one else, the two great aspirations of the 19th century: the exploration of the world and technological progress.

In his stories, Verne intuited a developing world where a human being without limits would travel around the planet and conquer space, although his opinion on progress was not too optimistic. In this sense, the optimistic vision of science in his novels is often attributed to his editor Pierre Jules Hetzel.

Both shared the goal of spreading knowledge among young people and believed in the education of childhood as a means to improve social conditions, but according to Hetzel, readers did not want sad or gloomy stories about progress. That’s why the editor exercised a strict control over the works, to the point that Verne wrote his manuscripts leaving half the page free for the corrections suggested by Hetzel.

Today I wonder what would have happened if Julio Verne had not been influenced by this excessive optimistic vision of science? Perhaps he could have warned us about the wonderful and at the same time dark technological future that awaited us.

Those who read Verne when we were young, dreamed of knowing the secrets of the world, reaching the Moon, traveling to the center of the Earth, navigating the ocean floor or flying. Today, when all that is possible, in a world where it seems that nothing is left to discover, our motor curiosity leads us to draw a new, more complex future, where, unlike the Verne era, pessimism does not conquer illusion.

In the current state of hypermobility, hyperconnectivity, and AI development, any Vernian imaginary of the future is overwhelmed, and perhaps it is time to ask ourselves about the place of progress and technology in the world we want to build.
