Solange Pessoa: Of the Day or of the Night is the first exhibition in Spain dedicated to Solange Pessoa (Ferros, Brazil, 1961), an internationally acclaimed artist. Her work spans sculpture, painting, video, and other mediums, addressing nature, memory, the body, spirituality, and life cycles. It blends references from Brazilian modernism, colonial baroque, indigenous cosmogonies, surrealism, and prehistoric symbolisms.
Her work is closely tied to the landscape of Minas Gerais, a natural and mining region with which she connects through organic and mineral materials. Pessoa lives in Belo Horizonte, has taught since 1993 at the Escola Guignard (UEMG), and participated in the 59th Venice Biennale (2022).
The curator is Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz, director of exhibitions and the collection of the Centro Botín. The exhibition brings into dialogue her early works from the 1990s with recent developments from the current decade. It includes two new installations produced for the building and surroundings of the Centro Botín and features the collaboration of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain.
