Would you like to discover a fascinating and little-known part of the history of Gijón? I invite you to the presentation of the book Animales, ocio y ciudad, a work that explores how entertainment and the treatment of animals have evolved in our city over the centuries. 📚
The event will take place on April 21, 2026 at 19:30 in the Patio del Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto. It is a perfect opportunity to learn up close about the research work carried out by its authors.
About the book
This work, published by Editorial Cicees, invites us to reflect on an often-forgotten historical reality: how animal abuse has been part of human leisure and entertainment. Through its pages, the authors analyze practices that marked social life in Gijón, such as:
- The abuse of roosters during the antroxu, which led to rooster shooting and fighting.
- The tradition of pigeon shooting and the abuse of ducks.
- The history of bullfighting in the city, from the first bullfights in Cimadevilla in 1660 to the inauguration of the El Bibio bullring in 1888.
Practical information
The presentation will feature the authors, Luis Miguel Piñera Entrialgo and Rafael Suárez-Muñiz, who will introduce us to this detailed study on the popular spectacles of Gijón.
