Los cuernos de don Friolera is part of the “Martes de Carnaval” trilogy, set against the backdrop of the military nature of Spain at the time. The play tells the story of Lieutenant Astete —don Friolera—, who receives an anonymous note warning him that his wife is cheating on him. Driven mad by the jealousy he feels for his frivolous wife, doña Loreta, who is tempted by a half-hearted dandy and neighbor, the barber Pachequín, and instigated by a malicious neighborhood, he plots his revenge. Their daughter, Manolita, enters the scene just as the supposed “cuckold” is about to kill the innocent lovers, calming her father’s rage. However, the pressure from his military colleagues clouds his deepest pride, and resorting to an ancestral code of honor, pistol in hand, he is compelled to commit the crime, shouting “In the Carabineros Corps there are no cuckolds!”.
