Teatro Gayarre presents a new version of “The Threepenny Opera”, the play by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill premiered in Berlin in 1928. This piece broke with the bourgeois musical theater of its time featuring a popular aesthetic, satire, jazz, and social criticism. The story follows Mackie Navaja, a criminal who thrives by taking advantage of a corrupt system.
The production stars Coque Malla, with live music. It is directed by Mario Vega, with musical direction by Miguel Malla. The action takes place in interwar London, inside an abandoned slaughterhouse that serves as a metaphor for a society that treats people as commodities. The staging aims for Brechtian distancing, revealing the theatrical machinery and breaking the fourth wall.
Cast:
- Coque Malla, Carmen Barrantes, Omar Calicchio, Paula Iwasaki and Miquel Mars.
- Cristina García, Andrea Guash, Pablo Novoa and Néstor Ballesteros.
Text by Bertolt Brecht in collaboration with Elisabeth Hauptmann. It is a production by Barco Pirata, Teatro Pérez Galdós, Unahoramenos Producciones and Auditorio de Tenerife.
