La bestia negra is a dance show by Proyecto Piloto, with dramaturgy by Borja Roces. It is presented at the Teatro Auditorio de Grado as part of Asturies, Cultura en Rede.
It takes hysteria as its starting point, which doctors called “the great black beast”; the word comes from hystera, uterus. At the end of the 19th century, the Parisian hospital La Salpêtrière housed some 4,000 women: beggars, orphans, the blind, prostitutes, lesbians, and many others. Every Tuesday, doctors and scholars—all men—were invited to witness their supposed attacks, which the women performed while hypnotized and exhausted.
According to the company’s text, the piece is a tribute to these women and an attempt to understand and love them. It is also a space for play regarding pretending to be what one is not and repeating what is expected of one, opening the door to other women who came afterward.
