La Asociación Gayarre Amigos de la Ópera (AGAO) returns to its annual zarzuela event at the Teatro Gayarre with “Katiuska”, by Pablo Sorozábal, with a libretto by Emilio González del Castillo. It was the first lyrical work by the composer from San Sebastián. It is usually considered a grand zarzuela, although due to its tone and musical variety it is close to European operetta.
It premiered on January 28, 1931 at the Teatro Victoria in Barcelona. The music was well-received, but the libretto was not, so Sorozábal completely reworked the second act. Ten days later the work was successfully re-premiered. Among its best-known numbers are the female lead’s romance, the prince’s entrance, the baritone romance “The Russian Woman”, the duet “We Are Two Boats” and the foxtrot “I’m Going to Paris”.
