About the documentary
We want the funk! (Stanley Nelson, Nicole London | 2025 | USA | 85 min. | VOSE English | NR -12)
When the groove takes control! This is a syncopated journey to the heart of funk that starts in African roots, soul, and early jazz, only to then explode into pure collective energy. With the unstoppable magnetism of James Brown, the psychedelia of Parliament-Funkadelic and Sly Stone, the audacity of Labelle, and the political impetus of Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat, funk became a universal language of freedom and resistance.
Between electric riffs and infectious grooves, the film also shows how it marked the evolution of new wave and hip-hop, forever transforming popular music. Rhythm, sweat, endorphins, fashion, celebration, and racial consciousness merge in a story where joy is a weapon of change.
