Santa Isabel Festivities in Lugones

The Santa Isabel Festivities are the great festive event of Lugones, the most populous town in the council of Siero, in the heart of the Asturian central area between Oviedo and Gijón. In 2026, they will be held from August 28 to 31, closing the festive summer of the region.

Their hallmark is the Sociedad de Festejos Santa Isabel, the entity that organizes them and which, according to the City Council itself, was created by a group of women and is over one hundred years old. The Xigantes y Cabezudos of Lugones belong to it, which are among the oldest in Asturias and are the emblem of the festival: their parade through the streets, accompanied by brass bands, is the most anticipated moment for the residents and the one that brings the most families together.

The program combines tradition and modernity. It starts with the chupinazo and the opening speech, and throughout the days there are the Ruta de Santa Isabel (a festive route through the town’s venues, with music and DJs), the rociero vermouth with sevillanas dancing, the international folk parade with guest groups, the mass and procession in honor of Santa Isabel, the traditional subasta del ramu, themed musical vermouths, activities and attractions for children, orchestras every night at El Prau, and a great fireworks display.

On the table: cider from Siero and the Comarca de la Sidra, cachopo, tripe, tortos, Asturian cheeses, and rice pudding; Lugones also celebrates its Bonito Gastronomic Days in August.

It is worth it for the large-scale neighborhood party atmosphere, which is very participatory and not at all touristy, and for the opportunity to see century-old giants up close.

Practical tips. Lugones has excellent connections to Oviedo and Gijón by Cercanías Renfe and bus, which allows you to avoid the car and enjoy the cider with peace of mind. The open-air dances last until the early hours and the El Prau venue fills up on weekends. Check the full program for the times of the procession, the Xigantes parade, and fireworks.
