Festivity of La Ponte in Pravia
Festivity of La Ponte in Pravia
History
The popular tradition places the birth of this festival in the 16th century, making it one of the oldest celebrations in Asturias.
Characteristics
Its most singular feature is the cattle fair, unique in the municipality of Pravia and one of the oldest in the region, which differentiates it from the other “prao” festivals. In addition, La Ponte preserves a marked rural character with traditional tests and shows such as the bolo batiente championship, the oxen pull, the horseback tape race, and the sung mass in Asturian, always accompanied by the gaita.
Significance
One of the most striking notes is its ability to remain alive over the centuries, overcoming vicissitudes and social changes, and still showing today all the authenticity of rural Asturias in the incomparable setting of the Arango Valley.
Importance
Over time, La Ponte has consolidated itself as a festival for all and for all, where tradition, music, and conviviality come together to celebrate popular identity and joy.
