The First Pilgrim. Oviedo

Immerse yourself in the history of Oviedo with El Primer Peregrino, a celebration that commemorates the historic journey of King Alfonso II the Chaste, the first pilgrim and precursor of the Camino de Santiago. From July 9 to July 12, the Plaza de la Catedral transforms into the ancient Ovetao to offer a journey into the past full of culture and tradition.

Featured activities

The program includes a wide variety of offerings for all audiences:

• Historical reenactments and theatrical tours.
• Craft workshops and traditional games.
• Concerts and live music.
• Children’s activities for the little ones.

The highlight will arrive on the night of Saturday, July 11, with the theatrical performance of the journey of Alfonso II. On Sunday, the festivities culminate with the emotional Despedida del Rey from the Ayuntamiento, followed by a royal procession on horseback and the traditional Romería Alfonsina in the Plaza de la Catedral.

Gastronomy

In parallel, the Jornadas Gastronómicas de los “Tortos del Camino” are held, a unique opportunity to taste this typical Asturian dish in collaboration with the Cofradía de los Tortos.
