If you are a lover of art and local history, you cannot miss this special appointment at the Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the close relationship between the painter Juan Martínez Abades and our city, through a very significant piece that returns home. 🎨
The presentation of the work Domingo en Somió, 1901 will take place on May 14, 2026 at 19:00. The activity has free admission until full capacity is reached, so I recommend arriving in time to enjoy this cultural proposal organized by the Fundación Municipal de Cultura, Educación y Universidad Popular de Gijón.
About the work and the artist
The event will feature a lecture by Javier Barón, head of the 19th Century Painting Department at the Museo del Prado. It will be a unique occasion to delve into the figure of Martínez Abades, an artist who, although he developed much of his career in Madrid, always found his greatest source of inspiration in Gijón.
Through this new acquisition, the museum invites us to tour the landscapes that marked his career:
- The pier and the San Lorenzo beach.
- The Rinconón and the Cimavilla neighborhood.
- The rural surroundings of Somió and its vicinity.
It is a fantastic plan to celebrate International Museum Day and connect with the artistic essence of our land. See you there! ✨
