Art and Spirituality. Imagining the extraordinary in the BBVA Collection. Exhibition in Avilés

The Niemeyer Center Dome will host Art and Spirituality. Imagining the Extraordinary, the exhibition organized by the Niemeyer Center and BBVA and curated by Alfonso de la Torre, which brings together a carefully selected collection of historical and contemporary works from the BBVA Collection in Spain.

The project, presented at the Palacio de San Nicolás in Bilbao and the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, will now be presented at the Niemeyer Center between October 10, 2025, and March 1, 2026, through four chapters, a selection of works from the BBVA Collection. A meeting between the ancient art collection and contemporary paintings, sculptures, and photographs, as well as some video art.

More than forty pieces distributed in four sections propose a meeting between the ancient art collection and that of the 20th and 21st centuries, reflecting the richness and variety of the BBVA Collection in various media and techniques: painting, sculpture, photography, and installation; also some video art, lent courtesy of other collections.

A journey from the beginning, the origin, symbolized by the presence of images that make the center their symbol. The birth of the image between the visible, exemplified in this exhibition by Pablo Palazuelo’s painting or Jorge Oteiza’s metaphysical box, with its mysterious hidden, thinking, and energetic center. Works that delve into the origin continue: spiral, whirlwind, circle, or luminous beam, the first chapter titled “The Origin-The Center,” which, among two others, reaches the end: the “Vanitas.”

Four chapters that allow, as a proposal, a contemporary and didactic articulation around the theme of Art and Spirituality in the BBVA Collection. An invitation to a journey through a set of extraordinary images.
